September 2-15, 2018 – Winnie Givot
A painting retreat. Watercolor Journaling in Astypalea, Greece.

Join Winnie Givot on the beautiful island of Astypalea in the Aegean Sea on the eastern side of Greece. Our days will be filled with painting, drawing and writing in our watercolor journals as we see more deeply through our art and our skills improve. Whether you are an experienced painter or a beginner, this will be a delightful and inspirational experience.

We will be staying in charming little studio apartments nestled side-by-side on a hillside overlooking the harbor and the beautiful town of Chora. Most of the houses of Chora are a pristine white with blue shutters and doors. Stairways and paths wind up the hill between the houses to the ruins of the castle fortress above and everywhere you turn there are scenes begging to be painted, including the line-up of 8 red-roofed windmills on the ridge leading into town.

“On Astypalea (As-ti-pal’-ia) we will also paint and swim at lovely beaches with tamarisk trees and tavernas and at a cave set at the water’s edge. Then there is a delightful old taverna in a tiny fishing village, layers of ridges giving way to the sea, and tiny Greek chapels, which are everywhere on the island, each beautifully cared for. And everywhere are goats, and beehives, many of which are blue like the the doors of the homes of Chora and the sea. The island is known for its honey and its cheese is exceptional. Wait until you try their thick yogurt with fruit and honey. And all the other wonderful Greek foods.”

Winnie will give daily lessons and individual help. This is an opportunity for art immersion as we play with texture and color, writing and page embellishments, while connecting with the beauty around us as we paint everyday. There will be lightheartedness and musings in our journals and our days. Most afternoons will be free for rest, relaxation, swimming, exploration and painting. In the evenings we will eat meals specially prepared for us at our home or nearby tavernas.

Our host will be Adriano, who along with his wife, Yumi, has led our workshops in Sicily and Paxos, Greece. Adriano has a passion for Greece and has traveled extensively there both by himself and with his family on his 40’ sailboat. Astypalea is one of his favorite islands. Adriano has a deep appreciation for beauty, history, culture and people which he shares with us, bringing greater depth to our experience.
