ART OF BEING
Join Michael Anderson for art and mindfulness meditation.

Mindfulness meditation allows us to drop out of the busy, frantic energy that often fills our minds and lives. It allows us to tap into a deeper sense of being. Out of this stillness, our authentic self begins to emerge. From this place of openness and stillness, the butterfly of our inner artist emerges, in colors and patterns uniquely our own! Perhaps you have never picked up a paintbrush, or maybe you have been making art your whole life. No matter where you are, we will all start at square one with a “beginner’s mind.” Whether for a first take, or a fresh take, we will journey through the creative process together, in a supportive community of fellow travelers. We will see artistic expression as a vital way to make meaning of our unique experience in the world; a transformative process of becoming more fully ourselves. It is a creative capacity we all share, an inherent mark of our human heritage.

This workshop will introduce you to a variety of mindfulness practices you can take back into your daily life. They will be woven throughout the structure of the program, and will lead into art encounters designed to nurture and give wings to the artist within. The level of guidance or independence in these activities can be tailored to each individual’s needs or desires.

We will also explore the art of being in the world – how we can carry these contemplative practices into our experience of landscape and history, and how we can locate our own place within it. Our playground for these explorations will be the rich cultural landscape of western Sicily – the salt pans that drape the coastline, where salt has been harvested by hand since the time of the Phoenicians, the stunning temple and amphitheater left behind by the Greeks at Segesta, and the grand medieval fortress and mountaintop village of Erice, with breathtaking, panoramic views high above the Mediterranean. What resonates with each of us in these encounters will be unique to our own experience. The seeds of that curiosity will take root in our artwork.

The container for this birth (or re-birth) of the artist will be Salinara, a farm villa from 1796, beautifully and lovingly restored by its owners, with attention to detail and design of the time period. A centerpiece of our time together will be our communal meals and our evening “salons” by the hearth of Salinara’s common room, in which participants will have the option of offering a part of their own experience – whether it be artwork, a song, a curiosity, a passion – whatever it is that makes them come alive!

Come along with us for a transformative art experience in Sicily. All art materials, excursions, and delicious Sicilian regional meals from our local chef are included.
