May 18 – 25, 2019 – Lori Putnam
Impression and Expression: Painting all’Aria Aperta
This workshop includes lectures and demonstrations, individual painting time, personal instruction, and group critiques to promote your progress. Demonstrations will be in oil, but principles will apply to any medium.
– learn how to see strong designs that occur naturally outdoors;
– quickly capture first impressions of the scene in order to make a strong statement;
– build on that statement using response and expression to complete finished works all’aria aperta.
The popularity of Lori’s sold-out workshops can be attributed to her approachable, giving nature and her hands-on teaching style. Workshops are open to students of any level, however plein air experience is strongly suggested. Experienced artists will benefit by gaining insight into individual strengths and weaknesses, learning to become self-critical, and developing approaches to stretch boundaries and move forward in artistic their growth.
Lori will motivate you, bring you new understanding, teach you to reap the benefits of painting outdoors, and help you think, see, plan and paint your subjects using a modern impressionist approach.
Students are required to provide their own plein air equipment and supplies.
Lori Putnam’s artistic development truly began following an intensive, 8-month period of self-study in Italy in 2008. The artist’s rapid growth and style continued to evolve for the next several years, due largely to the influence and encouragement from artist friends Quang Ho and Scott Christensen. In the past year, five of the nation’s top magazines have taken notice, and spotlighted her work and successful career. Now considered one of the nation’s most prominent and sought-after Modern Impressionists, Putnam’s paintings border on abstraction, and are recognized for their energetic brushwork, masterful use of color, and intelligent design.
The artist paints landscapes and still life, as well as the figure and portraits. When asked about subject matter, Putnam states, “It is much less about the actual subject itself, and more about color harmonies, rhythms, patterns, and shapes.” While she may use photographs as reference material, she prefers working from life, and travels extensively painting sketches to use for larger paintings at her studio in Charlotte Tennessee.
